Profile

Kyoung-Youm Kim received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Seoul National University, Seoul, Korea, in 1997, 1999, and 2002, respectively. His Ph.D. research focused on near-field optics, especially on the near-field holography.

In 2002, he joined the Telecommunication R&D Center of Samsung Electronics Company, Ltd., Suwon, Korea, where he was engaged in the development of hybrid-integrated optical communication modules, planar lightwave circuit platforms, and optical components for mobile handsets including backlighting modules, optical touch-screen, and mobile health sensors. Since 2007, he has been a faculty member of the Department of Optical Engineering, Sejong University, Seoul, Korea, and he is currently an Associate Professor.

His research interest is in nano-optics including plasmonics, optical metamaterials, and light-matter interactions in nano-size semiconductor devices. He has authored and co-authored more than 150 conference and journal publications in various areas including optical metamaterials, integrated optics, optical communications, near-field optics and optical memory, and light-matter interactions in nano-size semiconductor devices. He served as an Executive Editor for the Journal of Optical Society of Korea and as a reviewer for a number of scientific journals including Optics Letters, Optics Express, Applied Optics, IEEE Photonics Technology Letters, and IEEE Journal of Lightwave Technology. He is a Fellow of the Optical Society of Korea and a member of the Optical Society of America.
